Automatic vs. Quartz: Which Movement Is Right for You?
By The FWO Atelier · · 5 min read

At the centre of every watch is its movement, the mechanism that keeps time. Most modern watches use one of two types: automatic (mechanical) or quartz.
Automatic movements
An automatic movement is powered by a mainspring that winds itself as you move your wrist. Inside, a balance wheel oscillates several times a second. Many people value automatics for their craftsmanship, their smooth-sweeping seconds hand and the fact that they need no battery. They need a service every five to seven years.
Quartz movements
A quartz watch uses a battery to send current through a quartz crystal, which vibrates at 32,768 Hz. It is very accurate, typically within a few seconds per month, it costs less and it needs little maintenance beyond a battery change every two to three years.
How to choose
If you value craftsmanship and want a watch to keep for many years, choose an automatic such as the Heritage Automatic Chronograph. If you want accuracy with minimal upkeep, a quartz model such as the Noir Minimalist 38 is a good choice. Solar quartz, used in the Solstice, adds battery-free charging.
